- Ford 8N Tractor Parts 1947-1952. Ford 8N Tractor: Production of the 8N Ford tractor began in July of 1947. The 8N was a significant update to the older 9N and 2N models. Changes included a 4-speed transmission, increased horsepower and position-control hydraulics.
This 1949 Ford 8N is no longer fitted with a familiar fN-series four cylinder, instead sporting a modified flathead V8. Said to be good for a mind-bending and tooth-rattling 55 miles per hour, this up-engined tractor may be one of the most potentially terrifying vehicles we’ve ever featured. Find it here on eBay in Selbyville, Delaware with no reserve.
While bodywork appears very standard, the silver Edelbrock aluminum heads on the flathead V8 make a strong visual statement. Paintwork on the hood, grille, fenders and wheels appears nicely applied, though we spy a few sprayed-over rubber items on the frame/transmission case. Tires appear new, and per the seller this rig has only about 20 hours of parade use since the build. Diamond plate foot boards are a non-standard but useful addition.

The cockpit is as basic as they come with central seating and thin-spoked steering wheel, just like a slightly less dangerous-sounding contemporary Grand Prix car. Instrumentation is very basic, and there are actually two shifters present. The centrally located one is for the standard 4-speed manual gearbox, and another smaller unit for the Sherman auxiliary ‘box is located by the driver’s left calf.
Per the seller, the entire tractor was torn down and rebuilt for this conversion, including the engine, transmission and rear end assembly. The ad lists a Sherman transmission as part of the upgrades, but does not specify what model. The available types were Step-Up (higher ratios), Step-Down (lower/crawler gears) and a combination Step-Up/Step-Down. Given the quoted top speed, we’d wager that either the Step-Up or combination gearbox is fitted. Often these gearboxes were fitted by the dealership from new.
The flathead V8 is fitted with several modifications which should turn an already intimidating vehicle all the way to eleven. Edelbrock aluminum heads, an Offenhauser intake manifold and a trio of two-barrel carbs comprise the listed upgrades, though we also spy some modern ignition components.
While the seller lists this tractor as having parade miles only, we would not object to using it to pull the occasional stump as well. While the added performance is a somewhat menacing prospect, we’d wager the soundtrack is extraordinary and incongruous in equal measure.
