Fat

Overview

Few albums were as eagerly anticipated as The Fat of the Land, the Prodigy's long-awaited follow-up to Music for the Jilted Generation. By the time of its release, the group had two number one British singles with 'Firestarter' and 'Breathe' and had begun to make inroads in America. The Fat of the Land was touted as the album that would bring electronica/techno to a worldwide audience (Of course, in Britain, the group already had a staggeringly large following that was breathlessly awaiting the album.) The Fat of the Land falls short of masterpiece status, but that isn't because it doesn't deliver. Instead, it delivers exactly what anyone would expect: intense hip-hop-derived rhythms, imaginatively reconstructed samples, and meaningless shouted lyrics from Keith Flint and Maxim. Half of the album does sound quite similar to 'Firestarter,' especially when Flint is singing. Granted, Liam Howlett is an inventive producer, and he can make empty songs like 'Smack My Bitch Up' and 'Serial Thrilla' kick with a visceral power, but he is at his best on the funky hip-hop of 'Diesel Power' (which is driven by an excellent Kool Keith rap) and 'Funky Shit,' as well as the mind-bending neo-psychedelia of 'Narayan' (featuring guest vocals by Crispian Mills of Kula Shaker) and the blood-curdling cover of L7's 'Fuel My Fire,' which features vocals by Republica's Saffron. All those guest vocalists mean something -- Howlett is at his best when he's writing for himself or others, not his group's own vocalists. 'Firestarter' and all of its rewrites capture the fire of the Prodigy at their peak, and the remaining songs have imagination that give the album weight. The Fat of the Land doesn't have quite enough depth or variety to qualify as a flat-out masterpiece, but what it does have to offer is damn good.

Background, artwork and album title[edit]

While Liam Howlett is generally responsible for the compositions and Maxim Reality is featured on two tracks, this is the first record to include contributions by Keith Flint, who provides vocals on four of the songs and co-wrote three songs, including the two biggest hits, both of which reached No. 1 on the UK singles chart. He is also the vocalist on a cover of the L7 song 'Fuel My Fire' (from the 1994 album Hungry for Stink). The Fat of the Land album cover featured a new logo, dropping 'The' and adding an ant silhouette. The album title comes from the old English phrase 'living off the fat of the land', which means living well or being wealthy.[5]

Release[edit]

Released in the last week of June, the album hit number one on the Billboard chart on 19 July 1997. Certified double platinum on 2 December that year,[6] it sold 2,600,000 copies in the United States.[7]

In 1999, The Fat of the Land entered the Guinness World Records as the fastest-selling UK album. The album was also nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, but lost to Radiohead'sOK Computer.

Controversy[edit]

The National Organization for Women objected to the seeming misogyny of 'Smack My Bitch Up', though the band maintains that its true interpretation is 'doing anything intensely'.[8] Liam Howlett observed, 'That record was for the fans. Only brainless people get some stupid message out of it… I'm often misquoted. Some magazine said, 'Liam Howlett says his band are dangerous.' What I said was, 'For this band to survive, it has to be dangerous for us'… I wasn't saying we were dangerous because we're firestarters and we have spiky hair.'[9]

Nofx so long and thanks for all the shoes zip code. The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, [28] and was nominated for the 1997 Mercury Music Prize.[29]

Following Flint's death on March 4, 2019, fans used the hashtag 'Firestarter4Number1' on various social media platforms to replicate the song's success by getting it to the number one spot again; which was done out of respect for Keith Flint and to raise awareness of suicide among men.[30] Shortly afterwards, 'Firestarter' returned to the Billboard charts, entering number 13 on its Dance/Electronic Digital Songs Sales chart in its March 26, 2019 issue, marking the first time that this song has appeared on a dance chart of any kind.[31]
