I'm the author of the HW2 warlords mod and I'm looking for someone to help me debug why the mod does not run on the mac version (consider this the official thread)
I do not have access to a sufficiently capable mac to actually test the game so I will need some people to try the following.
what I do know is this
the mac version of the game loads mods in a slightly different way than the PC version, but essentially is equivalent
the suggested process for installing the mod is as follows (I'm sorry that its in an exe form, the reason is that so many people were incapable of following insturctions that simply zipping it became a frustrating excercies in answering hundreads of repeated questions)
1.) Download the mod and the second patch, install on your PC (or VirtualPC), copy the .big file and the folders to your Homeworld2-->Data folder on your Mac.
2.) Open Terminal (Aplications -> Utilities -> Terminal).
3.) Go to your Homeworld 2 folder.
4.) Right-Click (Ctrl+Click) on Homeworld 2.app and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
5.) Go to 'Contents' -> 'MacOS'
6.) Drag the 'Homeworld 2' from this folder to Terminal window.
It should look like this:
/../Homeworld2/Homeworld 2.app/Contents/MacOS/Homeworld 2
7.) On the end of the line write: '-overrideBigFile -mod'
It should look like this:
/../Homeworld2/Homeworld 2.app/Contents/MacOS/Homeworld 2 -overrideBigFile -mod
8.) Go to your Homeworld2 -> Data folder (or wherever you put your .big file).
9.) Drag your '.big' file to Terminal window.
Now it should be looking like this:
/../Homeworld2/Homeworld 2.app/Contents/MacOS/Homeworld 2 -overrideBigFile -mod /../Homeworld2/data/mod.big
10.) Press Enter.
sorry this process is convoluted, but the .big file is the bulk of the data and the patch2 (and music) had to be loaded seperately (to keep file transfers on my webspace down) essentially the -mod tells the game where the bulk of the sata is and the -overrideBigFile will 'patch' the loaded .big so both of them need to be used to work correctly and be fully updated
the crash occurs when loading and may be related to the PC icons crash (that will hopefully be fixed in the next version) it generates a seg fault
the 1.1.1 patch does not seem to fix the crash
the game will take MUCH longer to load then the default, the mod unextracted is almost 500 meg (unless something is drastically different in the hw2.exe it should run on a 256 meg of ram machine)
now for possible things to experiment with.

if you can, grab the big file extractor tool from the relic boards and extract the entire mod to a directory and move it into the data directory (it should be HW2/data/ship, hw2/data/sound etc) extract the patch to copy over these files and then the command line will only need to have the overridebigfile from here go into the hw2/data/ships directory and delete the icons directory and all of its contents
this will elminate the icons crash on the PC so it should eliminate the crash on the mac version as well?

try adding -luatrace to the command line this should produce debugging logs in the HW2 bin direcrotyr that may reveal better infromation. post the logs if you can so we can dissect them (it may generate a dated binary code file, a dated memory dump file and a hw2.log file of some sort I'm not sure of the name or if it will be generated) the binary and the memory dump are less important if the log file is present, post the log files contents if you get one
once we get this working I would appreciate if someone would generate a loader or installer that would work for the mac version (and would be willing to host it since it is quite large and I'm already using a half gig on my server) because right now tthis requires people to have a pc or vpc available and also a significant amount of error prone steps
ModI would like to keep tight control on the actual content of the mod (not have multiple mirrors or versions) simply to prevent problems of people having different versions of the mod or coming up with funny errors that are thir fault for medelling with it :-p so if there is someone interested in helping with making sure it is mac compatible contact me at swwarlords@gmail.com
